Hidden paradise of the Aegean: Lake Bafa
Lake Bafa, the largest lake in the Aegean Region, is one of the important lakes of Turkey in terms of archaeological and historical values. Bafa, meaning water, adopted the old name of the region where it is located. It is possible to see small islands on Lake Bafa and churches and monasteries built on these islands. You can explore the lake more closely by taking an island tour with small fishing boats on the shore of the lake, where you will see olive trees, ducks and herons around. We definitely recommend you to watch the sunset during your visit to Lake Bafa. The redness in the sky at sunset creates a unique view and is also reflected in the lake. According to legend, it is believed that the moon goddess Selene meets the shepherd with whom she is in love every night, and therefore the unique moonlight occurs.
On the shores of Lake Bafa, at the foot of the Beşarmak Mountains, is the Ancient City of Heraklia, named after the famous mythological hero Heracles. History BC. Dating back to the 7th century, Heraklia was known as a bright city during the Roman period. The city, which became rich with maritime trade, became a bishopric center during the Byzantine period. Built on cliffs and rugged terrain, where you can see different shapes in each, the city is surrounded by 65 towers. Located on rocky terrain, the Temple of Athena is one of the best preserved structures in the city. Other buildings in the city include the agora, bouleuterion, theater and Endymion Sanctuary.
